Why do I watch the Golden Globes when I don’t see movies or shows

The Golden Globes are probably my favorite televised awards show. More than the Oscars — with its high stress-inducing room — the faces of those who are going home disappointed. Not my fav.

Meanwhile at the Globes, a bit more lively. Dedicated to being stuffed into the same tight room for almost 80 years. What may be THE funnest night in Hollywood and the kickoff for Awards Season, everybody appears relaxed in the room. They look at ease. Folks are happy to be there. And if they lose, it’s not the end of the world. Unless your egos swinging that night.

I am an odd one. I enjoy watching the people the most. I haven’t seen one movie or show nominated. Even if I want to, life and my psyche get in the way. So, why do I write about an event that celebrates the work of those I haven’t watched? Because it’s pure entertainment. Simple.

Watching the shows and movies would help. But, I don’t feel you need to have watched the shows or movies to know what's going on. Which are buzzing, and have a great ensemble, direction, and story. Hollywood is a blabbermouth, and there’s nowhere the eye can turn without its influence. Clips across social media, news stations, and so on spark conversations. Our world is plugged into this avenue of the arts.

This time of year is when I get to see, who’s done the work that the now managing Dick Clark Productions journalist members nominate and award? Will there be as much laughter in the room as last year? Can the show survive with its new handlers? IDK. But, I enjoy seeing people laugh. I enjoy people having fun. And to be frank, it’s easy for me to pause and enjoy a show. It warms my heart to see people who put in so much effort to be acknowledged for their work.

Last night's awards were light and fun. To recaps

I’m excited to see everybody. Everybody’s invited to my birthday party” says Nicholas Cage on the red carpet, adding to the aura of a good time.

Succession, a heavy hitter on the Globes since its first season swept up awards with a bang. It doesn’t phase me that in their last season, their dues were paid. Kudos to Matthew McFadyen’s win. He will always be Mr. Darcy in my eyes and make my heart swoon. Kudos to Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook’s win. Then after the Best TV Series-Drama win, watching Succession should be in my near future.

Jeremy Allen White’s win for The Bear was well deserved. I have watched a few episodes of this show. It’s raw and feels authentic. He comes off as a humble individual who wants to not disappoint anyone with his craft. And Ayo Edebiri’s win is amazing. Her giddiness was infectious! As her acceptance speech thanked her agent's assistants, I could understand why. Working within this industry myself, the people who get the info for talent are always the assistants. And their win for Best Comedy Series, congrats. That cast kicks ass.

Anatomy of a Fall was sweeping it up. French Director Justice Triet and this film I have never heard of, but it’s on Amazon Prime. It is a unique drama I can see myself watching one weekend.

Gutted when Joe Hisaishi didn’t when for Original Score for a Motion Picture. I adore his melodies. I clapped so hard. As the Peter Pan classic suggests. Clap if you believe. I did believe you could win Joe. I did.

Jo Koy did okay in his first televised presenter job. Especially with only ten days to rehearse for it. A true comedian, even if he was bombing, he carried on. The jokes weren’t landing. And before you knew it, we had only seen him twice more that night.

And in the world of diversity this award season? It could still do much better. There were some amazing wins. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won for her performance in the Holdovers. Ali Wong and Steven Yuen for their leading role in Beef. Then, Beef won Best Television Limited Series, created by Lee Sung Jin. But Lily Gladstone? That was the highlight of the night. Her win as a Native American, I was happy to hear the words of her native language, Blackfeet. It was beautiful.

And at the end, Oprah reminds us just how magical she is simply by presenting the best Motion Picture Drama. Even though Color Purple didn’t win any awards last night, her poise and eloquent speaking were as expected. And OMG, she looked amazing. It’s truly just a smidgen of the reason she’s a GOAT.

Yeah, last night's awards were what I expected. A show of entertainment. Was it the best award show out of all I’ve seen of the Globes? No. The award titles could be shorter for one. And maybe next year they’ll have a better plan. I observed the psychology of the people present, the looks of the room, and the acceptance speeches given. I could care less about what someone is wearing, but can respect if their selection looks nice. Simply, the joy folks feel in that moment is palpable. And what’s easier to enjoy than someone having a good time?
